Why do a mock test?

A mock test is a practice test which can be used to find out a learner’s strengths and areas they need to improve. It helps show you how ready your learners are for their exam and helps the teacher and learner plan future lessons and study. It can give you more detailed information about:

  • their strengths
  • the areas they need to work on for the rest of your course.

It can also give you a better understanding of how the exam is organised.

Your learners benefit from doing a mock test in the following ways:

  • clear feedback helps them learn from the test
  • they get a better understanding of the question types, exam format and the time they have to complete each paper
  • it helps them understand their learning goals
  • their performance in a mock test often motivates learners to study more, both in and outside class
  • it helps build learners’ confidence because they know what to expect on exam day.

Activities

Here are two activities you can try before the mock test. Activity 1 helps learners with vocabulary and instructions. Activity 2 shows learners the format of the Speaking test. Both activities build your learners’ confidence by checking they understand the exam format before they take their mock test.

Understanding the exam format

The Information for candidates and parents booklet has useful information on what candidates can expect on the day of the exam as well as advice and useful links for parents who want to help their children prepare.

Videos of real Speaking tests and a copy of the examiner’s marks and comments are also available for each exam; these show learners and teachers how the Speaking test is conducted.
